Victorian Gardens The Victorian gardens were laid down at the end of the 19th century and have been extensively refurbished over the last decade. Behind the m stand lovely woods in which you can wander in a maze of paths. Ancient tracks lead from the top of the estate into the fells - you can walk from the house and scarcely see a soul. The woods are home to deer, badgers, foxes and red squirrels. In the woods and gardens you can explore the lake district without ever leaving the hotel.
The head gardener, Patrick Nixon, will, if you can find him, show you the rare trees and shrubs and draw on his lifetime's knowledge of the Lakes flora and the famous Lakeland garden designer Thomas Mawson.
