The Lake District
'I do not indeed know any tract of country in which, within so narrow a compass, may be found an equal variety in the influences of light and shadow, upon the sublime or beautiful features fo landscape'. William Wordsworth
'The wildest, most barren and frightful of any hat I have passed over in England, or even Wales itself; the west side ... bounded by a chain of almost unpassable mountains which, in the language of the country, are called fells'. Daniel defoe, 1724
We do not need to add to the infinity of words produced in praise of the Lake District. Its unique beauty is famous throughout the world. It is England's first and greatest National Park and is a strong candidate for World Heritage Site status. Visitors come to walk, to sail, to climb or to wander from one enchanting valley to the next. They com to worship the great poets or to find the home of Jemima Puddleduck. They come to Ambleside to find the biggest range of outdoor shops anywhere and to Grasmere for the fabulous gingerbread. You could visit for a lifetime and never exhaust the possibilities of such an extraordinarily rich and variegated place. In winter the district is temperate in the valleys even when there is snow on the tops.
Merewood is perfectly placed to be a base for exploration winter or summer. Its estate is a microcosm of the district and a panorama from the house is unsurpassed.
